Bill Predmore, president and co-owner of professional women's team the Seattle Reign, has enough to think about without managing PCs. "I don't want to think about technology," he told CIO.com. "I would like it to be like a software application where I flip a switch and also it just works."

So, in December 2017, the Seattle Reign ventured into a private preview of Microsoft Managed Desktop (MMD), a replacement desktop management service from Microsoft, which Predmore observed in advance given that the company is an organization sponsor. With MMD, corporate customers receive access to Microsoft 365 using a modern device that is definitely managed by Microsoft.

For a Seattle Reign it implies a mix of Surface laptops, some Surface Pros which have been used on the park and off, and then one Surface Studio. Microsoft will also support devices from HP and Dell, using the baseline for support a spec including a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chip, biometric login, and high-quality drivers.

Microsoft 365 combines Windows, Office and Microsoft's Enterprise Mobility and Security management service, and MMD locks done that even further. "We don't allow third-party agents to exercise, to minimize the numbers of background agents running," says Microsoft General Manager Bill Karagounis. "It's an exceptionally native stack secured by Windows Defender and Defender ATP, monitored by us inside security operations center it means that you're not compromising it life and gratifaction of devices you have five or ten agents running at all time."

Predmore has been amazed by the results, essentially how smoothly Windows feature updates and monthly security updates have always been.

"Technology is a potential competitive advantage for you but I'm forever about somebody ending up with a virus," Predmore says. "Now too security is managed by Microsoft my partner and i just don't need to bother about it."

The Seattle Reign's familiarity with MMD sheds early light on the organizations might expect in letting Microsoft manage their Windows 10 fleet.

Desktop as an effective managed service

For most people organizations, the same as the Seattle Reign, desktops are becoming a commodity, while there is little competitive benefit of be reaped from managing them. Apart from need highly customized desktop experiences with handcrafted group policies, and BYOD has accelerated the shift in managing the information users have access to rather than the devices they access it with. Within this increasingly cloud-enabled world, access control is king, with encryption and credential protection being far more important than being behind the firewall.

For some time, Microsoft has offered consumers the selection of buying PCs devoid of the pre-installed bloatware OEMs often include. These "Signature Edition" PCs reportedly improve your speed and have longer life of the battery. MMD is the leased-equipment business equivalent, nevertheless with ongoing management to stop PCs properly setup.

This combination of hardware and services may be the bet Microsoft is making with MMD: that organizations will leave patching and testing updates for application compatibility behind and only higher-value business tasks.

"On paper, customers who sign up for Microsoft's new service get with more speed Windows and Office 365 transitions on Surface hardware with one throat to choke if something goes wrong or is insecure. That is certainly different because they many different parties come to mind with other management schemes," says Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy.

"Microsoft finally gets its possibility to show the quality of ease faster transitions are often," Moorhead says. "This is a big chance to learn for the enterprise and Microsoft."

What MMD way for your organization

The complexness of managing previous versions of Windows has meant that handing over PC management to managed providers and outsourced It became rarely economic. Microsoft is betting that its new versions of Windows and Office - along with its cloud analysis and management tools - succeed cost effective to bring over desktops at scale, whether that management is done by Microsoft; OEMs as an example Dell and HP, which already offer on-demand device replacement; or partners just like Avanade/Accenture and Computacenter.

Microsoft has "tens of buyers" for MMD in the uk and US, including large, regulated organizations like Lloyds Banking Group and furthermore SMBs like Seattle Reign. Karagounis says the MMD baseline caters for large regulated companies but "we attributes needed smaller organizations different options with things they don't choose to light up purely because they're too heavy-duty."

This system will expand to Canada, Australia and New Zealand in early 2019 together with other geographies later during. Some customers demand a direct relationship with Microsoft, although later on Karagounis expects partners will give you "the lion's share" of those kind of managed desktop services. Microsoft uses tools like Autopilot that are accessible to partners and departments additionally it's documenting the configuration employed by MMD. "We're sharing the reference architecture and baseline with these partners, for them to decide whenever they want to replicate or create top of this service to offer it on their customers."

At any time you're on Windows 7 call for help migrating applications to Windows 10, you need to deploy Office 365 or Azure Active Directory - a prerequisite for MMD - you'll also need a partner to further with that.

"This offering wouldn't happen minus the cloud," Karagounis tells CIO.com. "The idea that so much of our technology has been able to migrate into a cloud-based infrastructure means readily start doing such things as managing PCs throughout the cloud."

The cloud will keep to allow Microsoft to get both operational signals and security insights, and help it to learn from any problems MMD customers have so that you can improve the knowledge of all enterprise Windows customers, Karagounis says. Right here is same principle for the reason that Desktop App Assure program: When one customer reports an application compatibility problem, numerous other customers have likely the same problem but haven't reported it. Karagounis says Microsoft helps make "hundreds of changes" within the Microsoft 365 service based on running MMD for early customers.

One changes was automatically syncing the desktop and customary folders like Documents to OneDrive. "If our users drops a cup of joe on their PC, we'd like to be able to distribute them a new PC just as soon as they log in everything comes down and OneDrive has replicated their desktop and so the known folders at the device and the rest of the data," Karagounis says. "We want the gps unit to be effectively stateless, so that we can reset them and replace them at any point."

Microsoft also recently changed the setup experience for Azure AD customers. Previously, users could go to a new PC in relation to their enterprise credentials, obtain the desktop, you need to working with files while policy had been applied to install apps and encrypt the nuvi.

"For our larger, more regulated customers that wasn't acceptable," Karagounis explains. "They wanted every one of the security pieces it is in place by the time an individual could start doing things, therefore, the operational risk and security departments know, 'That user is locked down; they're running with standard user privilege; they've got each of the right policies before he or she can do anything on our corporate network.'"

MMD is definitely a enterprise service and in addition the price varies dependent upon the choice of devices.

For Seattle Reign's Predmore, the beginning returns have been worth it.

"In this last, the way we managed the specific situation where we didn't possess available resources to regulate the complexity for those level of services we want to provide was folks simply did not provide those services," according to him. "That limited our ability because we didn't have enough structure prepared to run the business how we wanted do. Because you look at the importance of the devices and software licences and you to definitely manage it, this really is both better and less costly."

The test version of Windows 10 interrupted putting in rival web browsers and promoted Microsoft Edge instead as "safer."

Screenshot by Stephen Shankland/CNET

Microsoft has apparently reversed course around the Windows 10 test feature that sought to warn people from installing Chrome, Firefox and additional browsers that challenged Microsoft's own Edge.

An innovative new "fast-ring" test type of Windows, Insider Preview Build 17760, not any longer interrupts setting rival browsers, a CNET test shows.

The 2009 week, a young test version of Windows would warn many people tried to install the Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Vivaldi browsers, "You already have Microsoft Edge -- the safer, faster browser for Windows 10." The dialog box presented two options: "Open Microsoft Edge" -- the default -- and "Install anyway."

The feature raised some hackles and cut back memories of Microsoft's strong-arm tactics promoting its old I . e . browser contained in the first browser wars two full decades ago. But Microsoft isn't alone in these tactics: Google promotes its Chrome browser as faster and far better people who visit its very own websites in addition to other browsers.

Microsoft didn't immediately interact to a request comment on the change of direction.

This agency is struggling to reclaim just a shadow of an dominance it once held featuring its Internet Explorer browser. For some time, Google's Chrome has steadily eaten away at IE's share of usage, based upon analytics firm StatCounter, and Microsoft's Edge hasn't even outpaced IE despite its more modern design.

Normal, IE dominance got Microsoft struggling, with the US Justice Department as well European Commission dragging this company through antitrust proceedings. The browser and os in this handset markets look different now, though, with Microsoft Windows absent on touch screen phones and with Chrome dominant on personal computers.

Edge is accountable to 2 percent of usage today vary 3 percent for IE and 60 percent for Chrome, nevertheless its usage share has actually dropped a part of a percentage point fairly a year ago, as indicated by StatCounter.

Taking It to Extremes: Mix insane situations -- erupting volcanoes, nuclear meltdowns, 30-foot waves -- with everyday tech. Is going to do happens.

Fight the flexibility: Take a look at who's transforming how we think about energy.

Microsoft has released an innovative build for Windows insiders participating in the Fast ring, this also time it previews the upcoming Redstone 6 update priced the spring of 2019.

Windows 10 build 18237 doesn't bring quite a few changes to insiders, of which this makes sense given that work at this update is in the early days.

Each focus is on buying the October 2018 Update ready for launch, and is expected to happen next month, and all then accelerate enhancing the spring 2019 feature update.

Truly the only change in this build may possibly be the acrylic effect making it to the Windows sign-in screen, contributing to a more modern interface that users see before even signing in. Acrylic is part of Microsoft's Fluent Design System is already that make up other parts of these OS too, including in core apps.

"The translucent texture with this transient surface allows you to focus on the sign-in task by moving the actionable controls up in the visual hierarchy and keep their accessibility," Microsoft explains inside release notes (which you can read in complete in the box below).
"Known issues"

Coupled with several other improvements and refinements, also, there are two known issues, and 1 of them concerns the notifications displayed through the Action Center. Microsoft explains:

"You may experience the background of notifications additionally, the Action Center lose color and turn transparent (with an acrylic effect). We're conscious of for notifications this will probably make them not easy to read and appreciate your patience if we work on a fix," Microsoft explains.

Windows 10 Redstone 6 is projected to file for in the spring of still, as per Microsoft's typical release schedule. This implies it should be finalized in March soon after rolled out to users in April. Build release cadence, however, will accelerate as the October 2018 Update ships next month.

Microsoft wants you to have its Edge browser in Windows 10. Air cleaner will add, really, would like you to use it. Once you open Edge and show off for "Chrome" or "Firefox" using Bing, Edge's default search results, you'll be offered a massive banner informing you that "Microsoft Edge will likely be the faster, safer browser on Windows 10 and is defined as already linked with your PC". Four boxes below then make suggestions how Edge helps you browse longer, and faster, offers built-in protection and built-in assistance.

If this doesn't stop you, then Microsoft boasts a new, much nastier trick up its sleeve -- if you install Firefox or Chrome it intercepts the experience and you want to a window promoting Edge with a similar line specifically its browser is faster and safer. After that it gives you a blue button to click to read Edge, or just a grey one you could potentially click to attach the browser you truly want to use. Oh, and all this window will help keep appearing, if you don't go into Settings and Windows 10 from supplying you with app "recommendations".

This intercept is already showing up in Windows 10 version 1809 Insider builds, and also now we don't yet determine if this is something which will be put off when Windows 10 1809, aka the October 2018 Update, rolls seem to all users next month, but I certainly wouldn't bet to it.

This is another new low from Microsoft, an organisation which has shown in earlier times that it doesn't really care about user preferences. What forced users to upgrade to Windows 10 against their will began to allow 2016, is a prime example. We'd hoped those dark days were behind us, but it really really seems not.

As the banner in Bing promoting Edge is fair game, and -- to a new degree -- the side ads that Microsoft occasionally hands over when you're using another browser are usually also acceptable, Windows 10 actually stopping users from installing an excellent program -- that they've got chosen to -- in order to promote one more, inferior, product simply isn't on.

What's next? Really important to install VLC Media Player should we be informed that Films and TV is already installed and then we might you are able to use that instead?

What's your approach to this latest range from Microsoft? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Microsoft bowed onto the reality that enterprises won't purge Windows 7 by its January 2020 retirement, and contains announced it is sell extended support for three years past that deadline.

Called "Windows 7 Extended Security Updates" (ESU), the after-drop-dead deal will support through January 2023, based on Microsoft. The news was component to a larger announcement Thursday by Jared Spataro, the manager who leads marketing for Office and Windows. "While most of you are already on the right track in deploying Windows 10, problems in later life that everyone is a a different reason for the upgrade process," Spataro said in explaining the sale.

Left unsaid was the reccommended status of Windows 7-to-Windows 10 migrations by commercial customers. The Windows 7 ESU was almost certainly a response to customers telling Microsoft where did they would not make the same Jan. 14, 2020, deadline, or at a minimum a realization by company that, with regard to its aggressive efforts to push aside the older OS, enterprises could not finish their upgrades of time.

Clues abound that Windows 7 should be tough to expunge. In July, Microsoft told us that approximately 184 million commercial PCs still ran Windows 7 worldwide (but the number never did include systems in China, an omission Microsoft didnrrrt explain). But Microsoft's number - a tally based on PC telemetry - just a fraction of the very best estimate calculated by Computerworld using data from analytics vendor Net Applications. Computerworld's number for August: 378 million Windows 7 business PCs.

Other forecasts have pegged Windows 7's January 2020 user share in the remarkable 34%, meaning states third however Windows PCs will count on the then-unsupported software.

Windows 7 ESU, said Spataro, will probably be available when PCs running Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Enterprise, and then only if those os's were obtained with a volume licensing deal. Discounts will be offered to customers who have got Software Assurance plans secure for Windows or have subscriptions to Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 Education, for example pricy Microsoft 365 subscription.

Added support can be dealt in one-year increments for as many as three years and support will probably be sold on a per-device basis, rather than the per-user approach Microsoft has pushed for Windows 10 licensing. Prices "will increase difficult economy .," Spataro confirmed. However, Microsoft will not reveal Windows 7 ESU's costs or possibly the exact nature of the items would be provided.

Windows 7 ESU resembles what Microsoft once labeled "Premium Assurance" may become was unveiled at the end of 2016 for Windows Server then again axed when the Redmond, Wash. company put together "Extended Security Updates" in July.

To confuse matters lots more, Microsoft has had some other program, called "paid supplemental servicing," for Windows 10. Evidence that deal, a one-year-and-done paid support take into account Windows 10's feature upgrades, happens to be scrubbed coming from the Microsoft's page where entirely touted in February. The omission or demise of paid supplemental servicing was probably caused by Microsoft lengthening support in every fall's feature upgrade from 18 to 30 months.

Dependent on Spataro's announcement along with what Microsoft offers to customers through other plans - notably Windows Server's Extended Security Updates - Windows 7 ESU likely will distribute security patches for vulnerabilities rated as "Critical" or "Important," the most effective two tiers inside the firm's four-step ranking system. The actual may be steep: ESU for Windows Server 2008 runs 75% within the full license cost annually in the event the updates are deployed to on-premises servers.

Beyond patching bugs, Windows 7 ESU also allows covered PCs to carry on studies to run Office 365 ProPlus, the locally-installed applications - Outlook, Word, Excel etc - that from the foundation of the software-as-a-service Office 365. Microsoft had previously mandated that support for Windows 7 running Office 365 ProPlus would expire as soon as the former reached get rid of support in January 2020. "This means customers who buy Windows 7 ESU get the chance to continue to run Office 365 ProPlus," Spataro said.

Much more about Windows 7 ESU might possibly be forthcoming later this month. As part announcement, Spataro implied that Microsoft proceeds into detail around the multiple support policy changes during the Ignite conference, and it's also scheduled to perform Sept. 24-28.

Enterprises were also urged to consult their Microsoft account team, or their Microsoft solutions partner for details about Windows 7 ESU.

With the Windows 7 end-of-support clock slowly winding correct January 14, 2020, Microsoft is announcing it should offer, for their fee, continuing security updates on the product through January 2023. This is not the first time Microsoft has done this for almost any version of Windows, however may be the beginner it has been so public about its offers do so.

Windows 7 is still equipped with a large share of your respective overall Windows market, especially among business customers. Moving off older versions of Windows works as a slow process, that's what is advance planning, for businesses with multiple a huge number of Windows desktop machines.

The paid Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESUs) will probably be sold on a per-device basis, on the price increasing every. These ESUs is going to be available to any Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise users with volume-licensing agreements, and also with Windows Software Assurance and/or Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 Education subscriptions will get a discount. Office 365 ProPlus will continue to work on devices with Windows 7 Extended Security Updates through January 2023.

There are of key differences in between old Custom Support Agreements which enabled enterprise people to continue receiving security updates for the version of Windows that Microsoft wasn't longer supporting that ESUs, said Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft 365.

Before, Microsoft ran this product through its consulting practice, meaning the extended updates were available just the largest customers with deep pockets -- and active Premier Support Agreements (in the example of Windows XP, at the very least). In the past, customers needed to show Microsoft their plans for migrating up from the no-longer-supported version of Windows. They have to provide quarterly deployment milestones and then a project completion date, in conjunction with paying multiple vast amounts of money for extended patch coverage.

This period, the ESU program will be run out of Microsoft's Volume Licensing Unit and Core Windows Engineering "is producing these updates like the product," Spataro explained.

"We want to encourage people to gain off Windows 7, but we want to be make it a lot more than something punitive," he explained.

Customers curious about finding out a little more about the Windows 7 ESUs should contact their partner or Microsoft account team examine.

In other migration news, Microsoft is announcing a completely new Desktop App Assure service today, September 6. Microsoft officials said based upon customer and Windows Insider information, 99 % of existing Windows 7 apps are work with new Windows 10 updates, and perhaps they are willing to back that claim with this cool product.

Desktop App Assure makes it possible for users who encounter any app compatibility issues right after a Windows 10 or Office 365 ProPlus Update of filing a ticket through FastTrack this will let you Microsoft engineer talk with them so that the issues are resolved.

Desktop App Assure shall be free to Windows 10 Enterprise and Education customers. A preview associated with the service in Nova scotia will start off on October 1 grow to be available worldwide by February 1, 2019.

Microsoft also announced that the Windows Analytics services being expanded and integrated with ConfigMgr to create new service called Desktop Analytics, which is actually meant to help customers ascertain the upgrade readiness within their Windows and Office clients. Microsoft will provide you with more information for the service at Ignite soon after September.

Windows 7 is projected to arrive at the end-of-support in January 2020, and that is seen as a major catalyst either way home users that's why it pros to begin the process the transition to Windows 10.

But in keeping with a new survey conducted by Kollective and involving 260 IT decision makers in the uk and the US, this doesn't sound like a rush.

For a minimum of 43 percent using the respondents said they are just plain still running Windows 7 (in accordance with ITProPortal), which is worrying understandably when looking back at how much companies had to upgrade from Windows vista.

Microsoft pulled the plug on Windows vista on April 8, 2014, today some companies needed around five years to give up on this OS version. Therefore , there's a good chance some firms would stay within Windows 7 even if the January 2020 deadline.

"Windows XP still powering some computers"

What's more frustrating is that some 17 percent of the companies didn't realize that the support for Windows 7 is coming to an end. In January 2020, Microsoft would stop offering security updates for Windows 7, so any new vulnerability inside operating system wouldn't have any patch.

Due to isn't concerning enough, 33 percent of your companies exceeding 100,000 systems are nevertheless running Xp, the system that was launched no much less than 17 long ago.

There's a good side within the story too. The upgrade to Windows 10 is named a priority for 33 percent about the companies, which indicate that sooner or later, the alteration to the new OS would eventually start anyway.

Windows 7 carries a market share that exceeds 40 %, and Windows 10 is projected to overtake it to be remembered as the world's leading desktop OS by the end of the year. The decline, however, appears at a pace slower than originally projected.

Microsoft has warned Mac subscribers of Office 365 that they have to be running either macOS Sierra or macOS High Sierra next week when the company updates the productivity applications.

"As of an Office 365 for Mac September 2018 update, macOS 10.12 or later can be update for your new version of this Office client apps for Mac and receive new feature updates," Microsoft announced in a very support document.

Microsoft will likely deliver the Office 365 September update around September 11 or 12 no matter if sticks for your usual monthly refresh schedule.

At the same time, the Office applications - Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint - will be updated from their current Office 2016 designations toward the new Office 2019 labels, as long as the suite is running upon a Mac run by macOS 10.12 (Sierra) or 10.13 (High Sierra).

Those people who are not continues to receive Office security updates and may no longer get new feature updates. The equivalent caveat will apply generally if the user declines the September refresh to Office 2019: No additional features will be offered the applications.

Previously, Microsoft asserted Office 2019 for Mac - the "perpetual" license version of the suite - would be supported on only two latest editions of macOS. Office 365 for Mac sports exactly the same requirement.

Once Apple releases macOS 10.14, a.k.a. "Mojave," this fall, Office 2019 and Office 365 need to be running on systems operated by that edition, or its predecessor, High Sierra, to have new feature updates.

"When a fabulous version of macOS is released, Office 2019 for Mac's ... requirement becomes the then-current two most recently released versions at the moment: the new version of macOS and the previous version," a Microsoft FAQ said. But because Apple's policy could be to support the newest sort of macOS and the two previous versions, you will find there's Macs that always receive computer system security updates but which do not be with Microsoft with new Office features.

Per analytics vendor Net Applications, last month macOS Sierra and High Sierra made up a combined 78% regarding Mac user share.
