Microsoft has created the brand new October 2020 (20H2) update to all Windows 10 users with compatible devices. As being a feature update, the October 2020 update has been released in a phased manner. This helps Microsoft cope with any unforeseen issues, bugs, and other defects in the update or its rollout process. Among the good things about October 2020 is it is not that big of an update. It is just an incremental update to v2004 with no major changes whatsoever. So for the most part, it shouldn't be that big of an issue to set up the new update.

That being said, when the new 20H2 update causes issues on your system or you don't like it for reasons uknown, you can easily uninstall the 20H2 update. All you need to do is access the advanced settings and uninstall the feature update after that.

Within this quick guide, let me guide you with the steps to uninstall October 2020 update on Windows 10.

Backup before uninstalling

Before uninstalling the feature update, I highly recommend you support all the important files and program settings. Though Windows won't touch your personal file while restoring the previous version, using a good backup of your important and personal files is essential. In the end, it is best safe than sorry.

Steps to uninstall October 2020 (20H2) update

To uninstall October 2020 update, follow the steps given below.

Open the Settings app.
Go to the "Update & Security → Recovery" page.
Click "Get started" under the "Go to the prior form of Windows 10" section.
Select a checkbox and click "Next".
Click the "No, thanks" button.
Click the "Next" button.
Finally, click on the "Go to earlier build" button.

The entire restoration process will take a few minutes with several automatic restarts in between. So, wait till it is completed.

Detailed steps

1. Open the Settings app using the "Windows Key + I" keyboard shortcut. You can also look for it in the Start menu.

2. After opening the Settings app, visit the "Update & Security → Recovery" page. This is where you will find all the options associated with Windows recovery.

3. On the right page, click on the "Get Started" button underneath the "Go back to the prior version of Windows 10" section.

4. Select any of the options and click on the "Next" button. In my case, I select the "Earlier builds seemed more reliable" checkbox.

5. Windows will ask if you wish to check for updates, click the "No, thanks" button to carry on.

6. Click on the "Next" button within this window. It is just warning you to definitely backup files and you might have to reinstall some applications after restoring the previous version.

7. Click on the "Next" button to carry on.

8. Finally, click the "Go back to earlier build" button.

Once you click on the button, Windows will start the prior build restoration process. This can take a while to accomplish and Windows 10 will restart many times in the process. So, relax and wait till it's complete. Once completed, you can log into it as always.

Why shall we be held not seeing the "Go back to the prior form of Windows 10" section?

If you are not seeing this section it implies that you are past the window to restore the prior version. Windows 10 only provides you with Ten days to revive the previous version.

Whether it continues to be a lot more than Ten days or if you've deleted the "Windows.old" folder, you won't be able to return to the previous version. If so, you've got no other choice but to clean install the prior build or restore a backup.
